Opteron Dual-Core Processors Hit 3 GHz

AMD expands top server models with three new processors

April 5, 2007 - Today, AMD added three Opteron Dual-Core processors to its server portfolio. Apart from the clock running at 3.0 GHz, the new 1222 SE, 2222 SE, and 8222 SE have the same specifications as their respective 1220 SE, 2220 SE, and 8220 SE cousins running at 2.8 GHz.

Special Edition

The SE processors (Special Edition) differ from the standard products in voltage and power consumption. The 1000 SE series needs 1.35-1.40 V to dissipate 125 W. The 2000 (2-way Symmetric Multi-Processing, SMP) and 8000 series (8-way SMP) fit a 1.325-1.375 V and 119/120 W TDP power envelope (Thermal Design Power).

Slightly lower clocked Opteron Dual-Core processors are also available as High Efficiency parts (HE). Power utilization of these CPUs is limited to 65/68 W TDP.

In the near future, we will see another increase in clock speed. The 1224 SE, 2224 SE, and 8224 SE will run at 3.2 GHz, and bring the last performance improvement in these series before moving on to the Barcelona Quad-Cores.
